Earthquakes and Infrastructure

The majority of Californians live within 30 miles of an active fault line. And while the state’s seismic activity is nothing new, it’s estimated that only 20% of its residents have earthquake insurance. Following outcry from housing activists in recent years, Los Angeles has begun releasing records of its most at-risk structures revealing that some fifteen thousand buildings are prone to collapse in a major earthquake. As construction crews around Los Angeles work towards mandates to retrofit structures, missed deadlines mean more residents and building owners are left exposed. Despite Los Angeles now having the nation’s strongest earthquake safety laws, many fear that progress won’t come soon enough.
