In August, during Ukraine's unexpected incursion into Russia, hundreds of Russian soldiers surrendered. Unlike the contract soldiers (mobilized troops, and convicts) who make up much of Russia's military, the majority of the POWs captured in Kursk were conscripts—young men from various parts of Russia fulfilling their mandatory military service. Evidence reveals that these conscripts and their families were deceived by the Russian government and military, reassured that they would not face combat. Instead, they were stationed on a poorly defended border with minimal training and were largely abandoned by their commanders when Ukraine launched its cross-border offensive. Shelby obtained exclusive access to interview Russian conscripts held in captivity in Ukraine to learn more about their experiences. Report by Shelby Wilder for Newsmax.
